FAQ
Welcome to CT Binky Boppers' FAQ section. Here you can find answers to common questions about owning a bunny. If you don't see an answer to a question you have, feel free to reach out to us.
WHAT TYPE OF SETUP DO I NEED FOR MY BUNNY?
Our baby bunny's require indoor enclosures. We recommend an x-pen or doggie playpen. The bigger the space, the better. The days of small hutches and wire cages are over! Wire cages can also cause hock sock and sores on bunny's feet over time. Our bunny's each have their own playpen with washable pee pad liners laid down. We also use multiple litter boxes. The more you have, the better training will go. DIY click and snap playpens available on Amazon are great also. You can design them to fit any space.
CAN I LITTER TRAIN MY BUNNY?
Yes, we recommend litter training your new friend. The easiest way to do so is to give limited space in the beginning. For example, we use large 12 panel dog play pens for our adult rabbits. When they're babies, they only get 6-8 panels, and as they make progress with training, we'll provide more space to them. The DIY cages are great for this. Set up your hay feeder, and pellet/water bowls where your bunny has to sit on the litter box to eat/drink. This is when they use the bathroom the most. Don't put any soft blankets in their enclosure as they will urinate on them. Bunny's love peeing on soft items. We use flat grate litter boxes and set them up in the corners, or wherever we notice bunny using the bathroom frequently. This may change over time. Around 6 months, your bunny will start getting hormones. We recommend spaying or neutering at this time to avoid any spraying behavior. Sometimes bunny's litter training will cease to exist, and they'll start marking areas.
WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY BUNNY?
If your bunny is under 6 months, we recommend a hay and pellet only diet. Alfalfa and timothy hay is required for bunnies under a year old. They should always have an unlimited supply of hay. We feed Oxbow Young Rabbit Pellets to our bunnies under a year also. Our vet in a huge fan of Oxbow products, so that's what our buns get! Around 4.5 months, you can slowly start introducing new food items, like dark leafy greens, or a fruit or veggie in moderation. Fruits contain a lot of sugar and should be limited. Our bunnies love romaine lettuce, parsley, and cilantro. Around 4.5 months, we take toilet paper rolls and cut them in half and stuff them with greens. Bunny learns foraging skills while enjoying a healthy snack. You can also get a foraging mat and sprinkle pellets throughout for bunny to forage. We offer this to all our babies. If you want to give your bunny a treat, you can give a teaspoon of old-fashioned rolled oats. Never feed ice-berg lettuce to any animal, as there's no nutritional value to it and will give your bunny diarrhea.
BUNNY'S POOP AND PEE
Bunny's urinate can be a number of colors from clear to red and everything in between. Unless you're noticing brown, chalky urine, or spotted urine then it's usually not a concern. The chart below can help you identify normal pee.
Bunny's poop anywhere from 200-300 pellets a day. Normal poop is a nice round shape. They also poop something called cecotropes, which are essentially a clump of poop pellets. Your bunny will oftentimes eat these, as they contain nutrients the bunny didn't get the first time. Bunny's have very sensitive guts, and any stress can cause GI Stasis.
BUNNY FIRST AID KIT & EXOTICS VET
Bunnies are known for getting sick easily. They're very sensitive and can easily be stressed. We recommend finding a good exotics vet that specializes in rabbits. We've lost a bunny to an inexperienced vet before. Lesson learned! While this first aid kit for rabbits does not replace veterinary care, we like to have a kit available in the event of an emergency situation. The following items are in our care package:
OXBOW CRITICAL CARE -
Bloat or Enteritis, GI Stasis, or any stressful events
PET GEL BENE-BAC PLUS -
Diarrhea (Fatal in rabbits) CONSULT VET!
GAS RELIEF (INFANT DROPS - ANY BRAND)
Tummy issues or bloating
VetRX Veterinary Aid - Rabbit Aid
Respiratory Issues
Vetericyn Plus Antimicrobial Hydrogel
For Dogs/Cats/Rabbits/Horses
Minor cuts or skin irritations
CAN I LET MY BUNNY PLAY OUTSIDE?
This question is a hard one, and the answer is going to be vaguely - at your discretion. Rabbits are prey animals; therefore, birds and other outdoor sounds could literally scare them to death. I've read plenty of stories. We have huge hawks where we live that love to soar the sky in hopes of a tasty meal. I don't want my rabbits becoming their lunch or dinner. Birds of prey aren't the only thing as there's a lot of other factors as well. Pesticides on the grass are a huge no-no. I've had ferrets get sick and die from playing outside on our lawn because they caught something from a wild animal. You have to remember wild animals' poop and pee on your lawn. They have diseases that can be deadly. There's also mites and fleas to worry about. So, while we're all for getting your bunny out in fresh air to play, it must be done safely. An enclosure with something covering the top is a must, and we would recommend a liner for the bottom as well. Always use discretionary caution as you want what's best for your bunny.
